Dot
Message your Dot from Raycast
A Raycast shortcut sends quick notes to your Dot in the background.
Overview
This recipe adds a Raycast shortcut on a Mac so you can type a short message and have it land in your existing ChatGPT Dot conversation without switching windows. The author uses it to capture reminders and research ideas the moment they come up. The post gives a single prompt that you hand to a coding agent, which finds your Dot's conversation in your browser, builds and installs the Raycast script and tests it end to end. It asks you to approve the macOS permissions it needs.
Goal Prompt
Set up a Raycast command on my Mac that sends quick messages to my existing ChatGPT dot.
Desired flow:
⌘Space → dot → Tab → message → Enter.
Send in the background without taking focus or changing what I’m working on.
Implement and install it—not just instructions.
1. Discover my dot’s exact conversation URL and the browser where I’m signed in. Support a regular browser tab; an installed browser web app is optional. Ask only for details you can’t discover.
2. Create a small, executable Raycast Script Command with compact feedback, one text argument, and alias “dot”. For Brave/Chrome, JXA (`#!/usr/bin/osascript -l JavaScript`) can use the browser’s scripting interface.
3. Reuse the exact dot tab if open. Otherwise, open the conversation in a background tab or hidden window without changing my active tab or taking focus. If I use an installed web app, `open -g -j` is an option. Verify the chosen method works with my browser.
4. Wait with a timeout for the composer. Inspect current page markup; previously working selectors were:
Composer: [role="textbox"][aria-label="Message"][contenteditable="true"]
Send: button[aria-label="Send"]
For that contenteditable composer, focus it and use document.execCommand('insertText', false, message), then click Send when enabled. Pass message text using JSON serialization and preserve existing drafts.
5. Explain and obtain approval for required permissions, such as “Allow JavaScript from Apple Events” and macOS Raycast→browser Automation. Verify they actually work.
6. Register the script directory and alias in Raycast.
Test by actually sending harmless messages THROUGH RAYCAST. Test both an existing conversation tab and reopening it after closing the tab/window. Verify the dot replies and focus is preserved. Fix failures before declaring success, and clearly report any untested cases. Keep the implementation small.Integrations
- Raycast
- Brave
- Google Chrome
The prompt above is the author's setup prompt for a coding agent on your Mac, which builds the Raycast command; it is not a goal for the Dot. It drives the ChatGPT web page with browser scripting, so it may break when that page changes, and it asks before turning on the macOS permissions it needs.
