Work out product positioning with a four-step AI prompt chain
Claude or ChatGPT
Steps
- Gather and update your research first (market, customers in their own words, competitors, product data and ideal customer profile), then load it into one conversation and ask only for a summary of the biggest tensions.
- Ask for six positioning angles, each led by a different value driver and using phrases from real customers, with reasoning and a note of the weakest options.
- Pick one or two angles, tighten each to under 20 words in three registers (strategy doc, homepage, spoken), then have the assistant attack it against your top competitors and buyer objections.
- Turn the angle that survives into a messaging framework with pillars, proof and an elevator pitch, adapt its emphasis for each persona, and test the finalists with real buyers before you commit.
- Note: Keep everything in one continuous thread or Project so the assistant keeps your research in view. The steps are in our own words; the author's six prompts are on the Product Marketing Alliance page and are linked, not copied.
- Note: The judgment calls and the tests with real buyers stay with you. Repeat whenever the market, product or category shifts.
