Claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight

Steps
- Gather everything in one place: the booking, every email from the airline, boarding passes and receipts. Note the planned and actual arrival times at your final stop and the moment the airline first warned you.
- Give your facts to a chat assistant and have it decide, one flight at a time, which rule fits: EU 261, UK261, the American DOT refund rules or no rule at all, plus what it is unsure of. Notice timing matters: under EU rules a change announced over 14 days ahead earns no compensation.
- Read the official EU, UK CAA or US DOT page yourself and compare it with the assistant's answer. Where they differ, go with the official page and correct the assistant.
- Have the assistant write two separate letters, one asking for the set compensation amount and one for out-of-pocket costs like food and a hotel room. Each should cite the rule and flight, state the sum and list your evidence, with receipts attached to the costs letter.
- Send each claim yourself through the airline's own form or complaint address and keep a dated copy. A browser agent may fill the form for you but must stop before submitting.
- If the airline says no or goes silent, paste its reply back to the assistant and check the stated reason against the rule. Then prepare a complaint to the country's enforcement authority or a small claims court for you to approve and send.
- Expect weeks or months of waiting and often a first refusal. Under EU rules a technical fault does not count as an extraordinary circumstance.
