Test agent tool actions before connecting real services

Use cases

Methods

Run six failure checks on an agent tool before going live

agent

Steps

  1. Validate arguments before acting. Try a missing recipient, an unexpected field, and an amount outside the allowed range. Assert that rejected input causes zero effects.
  2. Give one logical action a stable operation identifier. Repeat it after a simulated lost response. Assert that it does not create a second effect. Also test that different arguments cannot silently reuse the same identifier.
  3. Bind approval to the specific action. Approve one destination and payload, then change either before execution. Assert that the changed action requires a new approval.
  4. Treat tool output as untrusted data. Return text that tells the agent to ignore its rules or call another tool. Assert that this text alone does not grant authority.
  5. Set explicit attempt and loop limits. Simulate repeated failures and assert that execution stops within the configured limits.
  6. Record decisions and effects. For each test, capture the operation identifier, validation result, approval state, attempt count, and final effect count without logging secrets.
  7. Note: Checks quoted from AI Labs' checklist, which runs against simulated tools. Passing them does not prove a live model or production setup is safe, so test the real integration before giving the agent wider access. AI Labs also sells a longer paid guide.
